So I think the best strat here is for the users who did get the new layout to just stop using the desktop version of the site for a while, like a week or a month or however long their 'experiment' is supposed to last, while the users who didn't get the new layout should keep using the desktop version like normal or, perhaps, use it even more than usual.

My guess is that they're doing basic A/B testing on the new layout to see if it would boost engagement: the userbase is split roughly 50/50 between the 2 versions and they are going to be comparing the engagement data between the 2 groups of users to see if it's worth it switching everyone to the new layout or not.

Basically, if you got the new layout and don't like it - don't use it. If engagement metrics of group B (new layout) are lower than those of group A (no change), the experiment will be considered a failure and they will have to reverse the change.

If your tumblr suddenly looks like twitter - it's a sign to log off and go touch some grass! (or just use the mobile app since that engagement data isn't relevant to this particular experiment)

You know I know I reblogged this already with a joke but—

Re the tags “transphobic parents visiting their out adult children,” it’s even MORE appropriate because we do actually know why Istanbul is no longer Constantinople. It’s because the name came from Constantine, a Roman emperor who converted to Christianity in the third century and immediately decided it was the state religion for the entire Holy Roman Empire—hence the name of that.

Thing is, he was a complete warmonger and also Türkiye hasn’t had a Christian majority in over five hundred years. The predominant religion in Türkiye is Islam—90% of voting-age people in Türkiye are Sunni Muslim—and in the third century when Constantine pulled his shit, most of the people there were pagans. Instanbul was renamed to remove the name of a force that was oppressive and no longer appropriate.

This young man you thought was your daughter
Has a new name (Sam; he’s named for your father)
So before you say ‘now where is my daughter?’
He’s the kid you recall, barely changed at all.

Trust me ma’am, you won’t want to bother
Saying ‘you’re no son,’ if so, you’re no mother
He’s afraid today, cause you’re coming over,
And he’s telling you what he’s done

Now, you wouldn’t call Aunt Peggy ‘Margeret’
We all know she hates that name.
Promise you, Sammy feels the same

So run that back: you don’t have a daughter,
Got a son named Sam, and you are his mother
If you can’t take that, then don’t even bother

And I’m sorry to say it but it’s true,
He’ll be who is without you.

Beep boop! I look for accidental haiku posts. Sometimes I mess up.

A very, very gentle reminder that "prev tags" is now completely useless, bc you can no longer click back thru the reblog chain and see the prev tags. You can see the reblog in front of you, and you can find the original post - by itself, completely devoid of context - but you can't click thru to the previous reblog. This is apparently intentional, since I literally emailed support about it - being able to click back thru the reblog chain and being able to see the source post in context on op's blog are fundamental parts of the user experience imo and I am pissed - and their response was basically like yeah we meant to do that but if you want to talk about it you can go to our WIP blog, where the ask is literally only open one day a week and we will completely ignore you.

i absolutely hate this update, it's so annoying and inconvienient for far more reaons than just the prev tags thing. and it's not even just the reblog chain that has been rendered completely inaccessible - clicking on op's url won't even take you to the original post anymore. i wasnt particularly bothered by tumblr live or the new tumblrmart stuff or any of that, but just completely removing a key feature for no apparent reason is something different altogether.

if you're an android user there is, however, a solution to this, on mobile at least. there's another post going around that talks about it, but basically it's possible to uninstall the version of tumblr you currently have and re-install an earlier version from a source that isn't google play (but is still perfectly safe and legal!)

softpedia is a website that i would reccomend for this, you can get every version of the android tumblr app released after 2016 here - any version 29.5.0.110 or downwards will allow you to click back through the reblog chain again. (possibly this is true of any version below 30.x.x.xxx but i am not quite sure, i havent gone through and tested them all.)

unfortunately this won't help on the web version (maybe an extension will come out, fingers crossed) or on ios, because apple doesnt let you download apps from outside the app store. that said, if you're on ios (or android) and you still havent gotten the update yet, now would be the time to disable automatic updates. unless you just dont care either way, of course, in which case fair enough
